Ticianne Darin is an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) in Fortaleza, CE, Brazil, where she teaches in the undergraduate Digital Media and Systems (Sistemas e Mídias Digitais – SMD) program and advises students in the Graduate Program in Computer Science (MDCC). She is currently serving as Vice-Coordinator of MDCC. She works in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Games, and her current research interests include digital well-being, the design and evaluation of player experience with an emphasis on eudaimonia, engagement, and motivation, as well as the development of ethical design patterns as alternatives to manipulative online practices.
She has received several awards for her work, including Best Paper and Honorable Mention awards at the ACM SIGCHI Annual Symposium on Computer-Human Interaction in Play (CHI PLAY) and the Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems (IHC), where she has also been recognized as a Distinguished Reviewer.
She is an HCI researcher at the GREat group and coordinator of the Multimedia and Design Cell (SMD/UFC). Ticianne Darin has led and participated in several R&D projects funded by national agencies like CNPq, Capes, Funcap, and the software industry.
Her current main project, funded by a CNPq Universal Grant, is titled “Digital Well-being: An Approach to Reduce the Risk of Technology Addiction.” This research investigates the tension between user engagement and addiction, with the goal of developing and validating ethical design patterns rooted in Self-Determination Theory. The project’s goal is to develop interaction models that promote user well-being while maintaining high levels of engagement.
From June 2025 to April 2026, she is serving as a UNESCO Individual Consultant for the project “Consumer Rights in the Knowledge Society,” in partnership with Brazil’s National Consumer Secretariat (SENACON) and the Secretariat for Digital Rights (SEDIGI). In this capacity, her main responsibility is to develop national frameworks based on international best practices for Security by Design. Her work involves creating official practical guides on topics such as age verification mechanisms and the implementation of “Child and Adolescent Rights by Design,” aiming to establish safer and more compliant digital services in Brazil.
She serves on the Steering Committee of the Special Commission for Human-Computer Interaction of the Brazilian Computer Society (CEIHC). She serves on several Editorial Boards, including the Journal of the Brazilian Computer Society and the UFC Press, and as a Guest Editor for the Journal on Interactive Systems. Her leadership in the academic community includes founding the WIPlay workshop series and serving in major conference roles, such as General Chair of IHC 2021 and Program Chair of IHC 2022. Her broader service also includes contributions as Student Volunteer Chair for INTERACT 2025 and Video Presentations Chair for CHI 2026.
